I was wondering about the food myself. I think we get a glimpse of foliage on one of those outcrops at one point. Also, given the unlimited free energy I was kind of wondering if there might be an import trade - those spice tankers could presumably be filled with avocados and tomatoes and frozen steaks for the return trip - although not for the Fremen I suppose. And I think you can only answer the resource question if you assume a kind of essentialism - for Herbert (and Villeneuve) the Fremen are resource guardians, pipeline resisters. They want to leave the spice in the ground, or at least to use it sustainably for ritual/party purposes only!
